Bush Discovery Walk

Home to three generations of our family, the farm has a diverse and interesting array of rarebreed farm animals.

Our Bush Discovery Walk is a looped trail through the Karangahake Native Bird Reserve

The Reserve has extensive signage, aimed at educating visitors about New Zealand native trees, birds, and aquatic life. The Reserve also has a replica miner’s camp, set up to tell the story of the Karangahake Gorge’s first miners.

Bullswool Farm sits equal distance between the Coromandel and Kaimai Mamaku State Forests, and the Reserve was created as an ecological corridor to support bird movement between them. Covering seven acres, it includes original bush and regenerating farmland. To support the birdlife, extensive pest eradication has been undertaken. Founder Tony Howse received a Pride of NZ Award for his conservation work and school replanting projects.

During the late 1880s, prior to large-scale industrial gold mining in the Gorge, sole prospectors searched for gold on Bullswool Farm and surrounding land. We still find occasional remnants of their time here, usually in the form of small schnaaps bottles, which were a popular alcoholic beverage at the time. The campsite has been created in memory of these men, and to give a sense of the difficult lives they would have led.

The walk is easy and it is suitable for able walkers of a moderate fitness level. However, there are lots of steps and a few narrow places, and therefore the walk is not suitable for prams, or people with mobility issues.
