Experiences
Karangahake was home to NZ’s second-to-last gold rush. Goldminers came from across the globe to pan the local streams and tributaries.
In the 1880s there were several miners based on the land that is now Bullswool Farm. We still occasionally discover old bottles and metal items that remain from their time here. Our open-air displays share the story of these early prospectors.
One of the few remaining early mechanised milking sheds in NZ. Several decades ago, a small dairy herd at Bullswool Farm provided milk for the entire local community.
After milking, it was delivered door-to-door in a small truck. This restored building preserves a small piece of local history. While visiting the Milking Shed, you can learn how to milk a dairy cow with the help of “Leaky Lil”, our fibreglass milking cow.
